It was a bitter sweet day for the Washington boys’ golf team on Friday in a home class 3A sectional with the team just missing out on a district appearance, but one individual saw his season continue.
The Demons shot a 356 on their home course to place third out of eight teams and that was three strokes shy of cracking the top two. Mount Pleasant just edged them with an 18-hole score of 353 and Solon ran away with the title by shooting a 316. Freshman Roman Roth did advance to next week’s districts by shooting a 76 for runner-up meet medalist honors. He shot a 37 front nine that included birdies on hole three, five, and seven, and followed with a 39 back nine. Frank Heave Jr. of Solon had the best round of the day with a 73. Teague Mayer put together a solid outing for the Demons with an 89, Grant Sobaski chipped in with 94, and John Prochaska had a 97. Scratch scores included Luke Beenblossom 99 and Isaac Vetter 100.
Roth will compete in Thursday’s districts at Flint Hills in Burlington.
