While many events had to be canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic, Kalona found a way to add to its calendar. The Kalona Farmers Market was reborn, putting together a season for the first time since 2014. Market Director Krista Hershberger tells KCII that she has a special fondness for the event because of her father John’s previous involvement. Hershberger says the market will meet in downtown Kalona on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon beginning on June 5th and continue through the end of September. Hershberger sets the scene for market-goers. “A few things from last year that were really popular are back again this year. We have a flower farm from Wellman, Under a Tin Roof that brings beautiful wildflower bouquets. Miller Family Homestead raises their own beef in a healthy way. They will be grilling their products that you can try and then order from them. There will also be lots of traditional Amish baking. For music, we are happy to have Blake Shaw. He was the main musician last fall. We will have different styles of music from Saturday to Saturday to provide more variety.”

Precautions are being taken to remain within guidelines for safety during the pandemic including the event being held outdoors throughout the downtown area, hand sanitizing stations and masks being encouraged. There are still spaces available for those who would like to be a vendor. More information can be found on the Kalona Market Facebook page and a vendor application is available in a link with this story at KCIIradio.com.
