The Congresswoman for Iowa’s 2nd District was one of 35 House Republicans that helped pass a bill Wednesday to create an independent commission to investigate the January 6th insurrection at the U.S. Capitol that killed five people.

Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R) was the sole Iowa Republican representative to vote in favor of the legislation, and tells KCII that equal representation from both parties was important to be able to support Capitol Police, “On January 6th that evening I went to the rotunda and I met with capitol police officers who had been assaulted, who had been pepper sprayed. They were exhausted and I think one of the ways that we can support the capitol police who have been blamed for lack of security is to find out what happened and what occurred and make sure it never happens again.”

The bill moves to the Senate, where Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R) says he is opposed to the legislation. At least 10 Republicans would need to join all 50 Democrats in the Senate in order to overcome a 60-vote filibuster and pass the bill. It proposes a 10-person commission with each party getting an equal number of appointments to examine the facts and circumstances of the attack as well as influencing factors. Five Iowans are among more than 400 people that have been federally charged in participating in the riot.
