Multiple fire departments were on scene for a barn fire southwest of Riverside Thursday morning.
The property owner at 2651 160th Street contacted the Washington County Communications Center at 10:13 a.m. about the fire, and the Riverside, Ainsworth, and Kalona fire departments responded. Riverside Fire Chief Chad Smothers says smoke was coming from the structure when they arrived, and the fire is believed to have started in a hay mound in the barn. Crews were on scene for a couple hours removing the hay bales from the barn, and Smothers says they would have been on scene for much longer if not for the help of several neighboring farmers. Cause of the fire remains under investigation. Washington County Ambulance Service, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, and Eastern Iowa Light & Power also assisted at the scene.
