You can find some two-wheeled transportation for yourself or the younger ones in your life at the Optimist Club of Washington’s 21st Recovered Bicycle Auction.

As an auction wasn’t held last year, the club has over 50 bicycles from the Washington Police Department’s abandoned bike shed to sell. Optimist Club Member Don Pfeiffer says this event is a great way for grandparents to find something for their grandkids to ride, especially as more families reunite since the pandemic this summer. The public can begin inspecting the bikes at 1 p.m. today in Central Park, and the auction will begin at 2 p.m. Pfeiffer says the starting bid is $5 for bikes 20 inches and smaller, and $10 for those 24 inches and larger, “We split the money with the police department. They use it for their training fund and then the Optimist Club we got a youth fund here in our club that is used for youth projects and that’s what we do for the most part. Our motto is friend of youth.”

Pfeiffer says many of the bikes are ready to ride, some may need minor adjustments, and others will be offered for parts. He adds that this will be the last bike auction hosted by the Optimist Club, though he expects it will continue in the future. Buyers need to obtain a bid number before 2 p.m., and all purchased bikes must be removed from the square by 4 p.m. today.
