It was a successful Friday for the Sigourney boys and girls of summer as they beat visiting Belle Plaine in a doubleheader. The No. 5 ranked Sigourney girls were a 4-0 winner. Things were scoreless until the Savages broke through with two in the fourth and two more in the fifth. That was all that the defense and Carly Goodwin would need in the circle. Goodwin finished with a complete game shut out, striking out 17 and giving up just one hit in the victory. She also had two hits, including a homer and drove in two in the win.

The Sigourney boys took down Belle Plaine by a 19-4 final in four innings. After a scoreless first, Sigourney erupted for 10 in the second and nine more in the third. Seven different Savages recorded at least one hit with Reid Molyneux, Levi Crawford, and Max Phillips all getting two. Josh Mohr and Phillips belted home runs with Mohr driving in six on the night and Phillips four. Mohr got the win on the mound, working three innings, giving up four runs, two hits and striking out five. With the win, Sigourney is now 4-1 on the year.

The Sigourney softball team went on to play at the Oskaloosa tournament over the weekend where they split a pair of games. They opened with a 4-0 win over Pella before falling to No. 4 in 3A West Burlington 10-0. Against the Dutch, the Savages scored three times in the first and added one more in the third. Jo Moore and Carly Goodwin led the Sigourney offense with two hits each. Moore, Kaylee Weber, Macy Fisch and Darby Mitchell each had one RBI. Goodwin got the win in the circle, throwing a one hitter and striking out 12.

Against the Falcons, the Savages didn’t have an answer for Falcon starter Lauren Summers who threw a complete game shut out, allowing just four Sigourney hits. Jo Moore took the loss for Sigourney, going five and a third, giving up 10 hits and 10 runs while striking out six. West Burlington scored three in the first, four in the fourth and three more in the sixth to end the game early. Sigourney is now 5-3 this year.
