Protecting home field is what the Highland summer teams did in Riverside on Tuesday when they welcomed Columbus for a Southeast Iowa Super Conference night and came out victorious in both games.
The Huskie softball team scored in five different innings and controlled the entire game for a 9-3 win. Grace Batcheller had three of the team’s nine hits with a single, double, and triple while bringing in a run. Payton Brun went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Batcheller got the win in the circle tossing five frames giving up two earned runs on four hits and striking out six. Highland improves to 8-2 and Columbus drops to 2-6.
Crooked number innings was the theme for the Highland baseball team including a 12 run third that led to a 22-0 win in four innings. The Huskies had eight hits and took 20 free passes. Kaige Vonnahme went 2-for-2 with four RBI and three runs scored. Logan Bonebrake also brought in four tallies. Trevor McFarland threw a four inning no hitter with just two walks and 10 strikeouts. The Huskies are now 7-2 and Columbus is 0-5.
