Exorcising some demons is exactly what the Demon softball team did on Monday by beating Fairfield for the first time in nine tries and Washington split a Southeast Conference doubleheader.

As heard on KCII, the Trojan (10-7, 6-2) offense was relentless in game one by peppering 14 hits and scoring in every inning en route to a 14-5 victory. Hannah Simpson did a bulk of the damage going 3-for-5 with four RBI including a solo shot to center field. Ella Greiner led Washington going 3-for-4 with one RBI and Kellie Dallmeyer also had three hits. Bella Salazar threw all seven innings to record the loss, but brought in two runs offensively.

The finale was a complete 180 degree turn for the Demons and they jumped out to an early lead they never relinquished to triumph 12-2. They plated a pair in the first, four in the second, five in the fourth, and one more in the fifth on an error to complete the walk off mercy rule victory. Fresh off her complete game shutout over the weekend in Creston, Halle Cuddeback had an encore performance in the circle going all five innings giving up two runs, eight hits, and allowing just one free pass. The eighth grader also led the offense going 3-for-3 with one RBI. Greiner added three more knocks and drove in two.

Head Coach Ben Obermann tells KCII Sports Cuddeback has impressed in her first varsity week. “When you don’t walk anybody good things happen. She located extremely well which is what you have to do against a team like Fairfield that can swing it. She was hitting corners, was able to get three pitches over for a strike, all while pitching with some lower back tightness that she was pushing through.” This was the first win for the Demons over their conference rival since June of 2018.

The baseball team also managed a split against the Trojans (5-9, 3-5) by winning game one 5-4 in walk off fashion and falling in the nightcap 13-3. The Demons are now 7-5 overall and 4-4 in the league. The softball squad hosts Centerville tomorrow and both sports travel to Mount Pleasant on Thursday.
