Drought conditions are unchanged in the last week for Washington County, while severe drought continues to spread across northern and central Iowa.

Most of Iowa is experiencing a level of drought intensity according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor, while the northwest portion of Washington County is abnormally dry. Precipitation deficits continue to accumulate through the first half of June, which is climatologically the wettest month of the year for Iowa, according to the latest Crop Progress and Condition report from the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture levels rated 24% very short, 46% short, 30% adequate, and 0% surplus. The percentage of topsoil moisture rated short to very short increased from 39% to 70% in the past week. Subsoil moisture levels rated 21% very short, 50% short, 29% adequate, and 0% surplus.
