Several facility projects are underway this summer for the Washington Community School District.
Superintendent Willie Stone says the Stewart Elementary parking lot expansion is in progress with the north side lots now poured and work being done on the sidewalks. Once that is finished they will move to reconfigure the south parking lot to create more parking spaces and increase traffic flow. At Lincoln Elementary the new playground cement pad has been poured and is ready for equipment installation with the rubber surface to be poured last. The heating, ventilation, and air conditioning project is also underway for Lincoln, and eight parking lot stalls have also been added to the south side of the building to help alleviate some pressure there. Stone comments on the overall progress, “As a district there’s some really exciting things going on as far as the HVAC system at Lincoln, the new upgrade to their playground, the new parking lot at Stewart, those are big things. If people have driven by Stewart during the school day it’s jam packed with cars all over the place and I believe we’ll be able to get basically all of our cars off the roads to make it safer for people.”
Other projects this summer include a renovation of the South Rise Room at Lincoln, which will include two offices and a conference room. The special education director and school to family liaison will work out of the area, and an entryway will be built into the south side of the building for parents to discreetly enter and exit the building for meetings.
