It was a clean sweep last night for the Washington summer teams when they surged past Keokuk in a pair of Southeast Conference doubleheaders.
The softball games were heard on KCII and Washington fans experienced 11-1 and 10-0 final scores. The first game saw Washington score in four of the six frames where everyone reached base safely. Bella Salazar led a 13 hit offense going 3-for-3 with one RBI and a walk. The eighth grader did the rest in the circle by getting out of a few early inning jams en route to a complete game giving up just one run on five hits and walking four. The momentum carried into the nightcap with a couple crooked number frames that led to the contest ending in five. Patience was the name of the game with the Demons taking 12 walks in the win. Ava Turner and Kellie Dallmeyer each had two knocks with one RBI. Halle Cuddeback threw a complete game shutout giving up just two hits and one walk.
Head Coach Ben Obermann tells KCII Sports his team came out with something to prove. “We talked about coming out with a chip on our shoulder and really play well in these final nine games of the regular season. We did just that tonight. We had good approaches at the plate and anytime you score 21 runs on a night, you will take that.” The orange and black are now 16-14 overall and sit comfortably in third place in the SEC with a 10-5 league mark. The regional pairings came out last week and Washington will make a trip to Oskaloosa for the first round on July 8th. They next get on the diamond tomorrow against Mid-Prairie.
The Demon baseball team also picked up a pair of wins at Dick Sojka Memorial Field with 13-3 and 10-6 victories over the Chiefs (2-20, 1-13). Washington improves to 12-7 overall and 8-6 in the league. They travel to Fairfield on Thursday.
