When the summer schedules were released this spring for Hillcrest Academy, the final day of June had just one softball game on the docket. With all of the rain we have received in the area that has changed drastically, as the Raven baseball team will take on Mediapolis in a game that has been rescheduled three times and the Raven softball team will meet both New London and Winfield-Mt. Union in Kalona in a rare, split doubleheader against multiple teams. The WMU game is rescheduled from last night with the location moved from Winfield to Kalona.

The Hillcrest baseball team comes into the day with an overall record of 8-6. The Ravens were 3-0 shut out winners over Wapello with Noah Miller and Luke Schrock combining on a no-hitter against the Indians. On the year, the Ravens are hitting .318 as a team with a staff ERA of 3.46. Individually, Hillcrest is led by Luke Schrock with a .458 average with a team high 22 hits, 16 runs scored and 15 RBI. On the hill it’s Miller, Seth Ours and Liam Schrock at a combined 4-0 for the year. Eli Ours and London Schrock have thrown 38 innings with an ERA of 3.30.

Mediapolis is 15-8 overall and one half game over Highland at 11-3 in the Superconference North Division for the top spot. The Bulldogs were beaten Tuesday at Burlington Notre Dame 5-3. On the year, MEPO is hitting .330 as a team with a staff ERA of 3.19. Individually, the Bulldogs are led by Jaxon Brooks with a .429 average on 24 hits, 23 RBI and 19 runs scored. Brooks and Ryan Ensminger are a tough 1-2 punch for the Dogs with their combined 6-0 record and 0.62ERA. These two teams met on June 3rd, with Mediapolis taking a 6-2 win at home. MEPO has won 14 of the last 15 in the series.

The Raven softball team will welcome both New London and Winfield-Mt. Union to Kalona this afternoon. Hillcrest enters play with an overall record of 0-18. The Ravens were swept in a doubleheader Monday by the Wapello Arrows 10-0 and 16-3. For the season, Hillcrest is hitting .266 as a team with a combined ERA of 10.92. The Ravens are led individually by Evelyn Gerber with a .412 average, 14 hits and six runs scored. Malia Yoder has a team best eight RBI. In the circle, Leah Bontrager has thrown 72 innings with an 0-15 record and 12.29 ERA. Malia Yoder is 0-3 with a 5.95 ERA.

New London is Hillcrest’s first opponent on the day. The Tigers are 5-20 on the year, 0-9 in the Superconference South Division. Last time out, they beat county rival Mount Pleasant 16-8. For the year, New London is hitting .286 as a team with an ERA of 4.72. Individually, the Tigers are paced by Elly Manning with a .408 average on 31 hits and 24 runs scored. In the circle, New London is led by Manning with 107 innings of work 5-12 record and 3.40ERA. The Tigers have won the last two meetings in the series including a 14-4 victory in 2017.

After the Ravens finish with the Tigers, they will meet Winfield-Mt. Union for a makeup from Tuesday night. The Wolves are 14-5 on the year, 10-4 in the Superconference North Division. They were edged by Highland 3-2 in Riverside Monday. WMU is ranked No. 13 in class 1A in this week’s poll from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. On the season, the Wolves are hitting .367 as a team with a staff ERA of 0.74. Individually Winfield-Mt. Union is led by Jobey Malone with a .483 average on 29 hits, 15 RBI and 10 runs scored. In the circle it’s Madie Anderson with a 14-5 record and 0.74 ERA across 123 innings of work. These two teams met on June 8th with the Lady Wolves taking a 9-0 victory. First pitch for Hillcrest and New London softball is scheduled for 1p.m. with a tentative start time for Winfield-Mt. Union and the Ravens at three this afternoon.
