With Independence Day falling on a Sunday, the cities of Wayland and Wellman hosted their annual celebrations on Saturday. Both cities were forced to cancel their celebrations last summer but both were in full swing this year.
Wayland’s daylong celebrations included usual favorites like the Lions Club Breakfast, and parade. A highlight this year was the West Park Wetlands Grand Opening with a ribbon cutting to honor Mayor Greg Rich and the donors that helped fund the new splash pad and walking path. The city also recognized retiring police chief Ron Roth and the new chief Dustin Stuelke in the Changing of the Chiefs ceremony. The day concluded back at WACO High School with a fireworks show at the football field.
Wellman’s town celebration included a parade, pony rides, bingo, horseshoe tournament and obstacle course with music provided by Dan York. Finishing off the celebration was a fireworks display at dusk. The Big Red and Lil’ Big Red Radios traveled to both Wayland and Wellman’s town celebrations, broadcasting live and playing music as part of the KCII Summer Town Tour.
