The Hillcrest Academy Raven baseball team completed a season sweep of Winfield-Mt. Union with their road win Wednesday 8-2. In a game heard on AM and FM KCII, things started out slow for both offenses and with wet conditions as showers moved through Henry County, ultimately forcing a 32 minute rain delay in the bottom of the 2nd inning with no score and a runner on first for the Wolves. After the weather moved out of the area, the two starting pitchers, London Schrock for Hillcrest and Andrew Brown continued to dominate action, with Schrock not allowing a hit until the third and Brown the fourth. The Ravens would be the first to get on the board with a single run in the fourth frame when Luke Schrock drove in London Schrock with an RBI base hit. The Wolves responded in the bottom half with two runs when Nick Crow scored on an RBI hit from Luke Pfeiffer, who then came home on an RBI hit from Lane Genkinger to give WMU a 2-1 lead.
Things stayed that way until the sixth when the Ravens capitalized on back to back Winfield-Mt. Union errors and a walk as London Schrock delivered an RBI hit to make it 3-2 Hillcrest as Noah Miller and Eli Ours scored. With a slim lead going to the seventh, the Ravens gave themselves some breathing room in their final at bat, sending all nine to the plate, scoring five times on two hits and one error with a bases loaded RBI triple for Luke Schrock that drove in three and an RBI single for Noah Miller to make it 8-2. London Schrock closed the door on his complete game victory in the bottom half. After the game, Hillcrest head coach Danny Hershberger talked about the Schrocks, both on the mound and at the plate. “The best thing for London is when he gets ahead in the count. He’s aggressive. He was able to do that for us today. It wasn’t our best overall game of the year but he kept us in it until we could get going. Luke has become that guy we can count on at the plate to come up with that big hit when we need it. He’s the guy you want up there with guys on base. He came through again for us today and continues to get more and more confident at the plate.”
London Schrock went the distance on the mound in the win, giving up four hits, two runs walking two and striking out six. At the plate he was 2/3 with an RBI and a run scored. Luke Schrock was 2/4 with 4RBI. Winfield-Mt. Union was led by Pfeiffer with a hit, run and RBI. Genkinger also added a hit and an RBI while Noah Sparrow and Jacob Ford had hits with Nick Crow scoring a run. Brown took the loss for the Wolves going six innings, giving up five hits, three runs, walking one and striking out one. Hillcrest is now 11-8 on the year. WMU falls to 2-21.
