******UPDATE: THIS GAME HAS BEEN SUSPENDED TO MONDAY. TIME TBD***********
We knew a pitcher’s duel was bound to happen on the softball diamond in Winfield yesterday. What we didn’t know is that the pitcher’s duel would last two days. The highly anticipated Winfield-Mt. Union vs. Highland Class 1A Region 8 Semifinal was suspended on Friday in the sixth inning with the score tied at 0-0 and the potential go ahead Wolves run just 60 feet away.
The game that will resume action today has played out just like the two regular season meetings did with both hurlers dominating in the circle. WMU’s Madie Anderson has 13 strikeouts through six innings of work and has only surrendered three hits. Grace Batcheller held serve for Highland giving up six hits in 5 1/3 frames and has got some help from her defense. Shortstop Sarah Burton negated a lead off single for the Wolves in the fifth with a spectacular diving grab to rob Melina Oepping of a hit and the freshman threw it back to first to double off the runner. The bottom of the sixth started with WMU’s Carlee Sloan leading off with a double and she was sacrificed to third on a bunt by Kayreanna Sharar. With a runner on third and just one away, Anna Anderson and her .500 batting average came to the plate when the umps had to call it due to lightning. Right before the delay, Jessica Kraus was set to relieve Batcheller in the circle. Sloan and Sharar lead the Wolves offense with a double each while the singles for the Huskies came from Burton, Kraus, and Payton Brun.
The game will pick up where it left off at noon today and listen to the conclusion on AM 1380 FM 102.5 KCII.
