A game that finished nearly 74 hours after the first pitch was thrown ended with jubilation for one area softball team and heartache for another. The suspended Class 1A Region 8 semifinal in Winfield picked up in the sixth inning last night and after eight more frames Highland was able to score the game’s only run in the 14th for a 1-0 victory over the host Wolves.

After Grace Batcheller tossed the first six scoreless innings on Friday, Jessica Kraus was masterful in the circle last night by twirling 6 2/3 frames of no hit ball and walking just two. Batcheller was reentered in the bottom of the 13th to record the final six outs and the win. The only tally came in the top half when Sarah Burton singled, got to third a few pitches later, and reached home on a pass ball. In her final high school game, Madie Anderson was vintage Madie Anderson tossing all 14 innings giving up just the one run and six hits. Burton led the Huskies with three knocks including a double.

WMU closes the year 17-6 and the careers wrapped up for three seniors in Anderson, Molly Miller, and Emma Haines. The Huskies improve to 22-6 and they will try to punch their ticket to state today when they travel to face Lisbon in the regional final. The Lions are 34-8 and defeated Central City 3-0 in the semis. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Lisbon.
