Information on the cause of the January 4th home explosion in Washington was released by the Washington Fire Department Friday.

Fire Chief Brendan DeLong says that after a joint investigation by the Iowa State Fire Marshal, Washington Fire Department, Washington Police Department, and the Johnson County Medical Examiner, the investigation revealed a gas leak from an unknown source. The gas vapors filled the confined space of the apartment which were ignited when the occupant lit a cigarette. The source of that gas leak is undetermined. No further information will be provided at this time. The explosion that occurred at 1114 East Washington Street resulted in the death of 68-year-old George Carpenter and injuries to a minor.
