Trying to knock off another Southeast Iowa Super Conference opponent is the goal for the Sigourney baseball team tonight when they make a trip to face off with #7 New London in the class 1A district 9 title game.

The South Iowa Cedar League champs in the Savages (19-5) got to this point after playoff wins over Winfield-Mt. Union by an 11-1 score and Burlington Notre Dame 13-7. In the Tuesday win over the Nikes, the Savages came back from 7-1 down in the fifth with a four run and eight run frame. The team is batting .311 on the season led by Cade Molyneux with a .470 BA and Cade Streigle has brought in 36 runs. Nine pitchers have teamed up for a 2.57 ERA led by Streigle’s 1.87 in 30 innings of work. They will have to be at their best against the SEISC Champs in the Tigers (24-1), as their .384 batting average and 1.54 ERA rank in the top three in class 1A. Kooper Schulte has done a bulk of the work with a .371 BA and Josh Catala has a minuscule 0.68 ERA in 31 innings on the mound.

Sigourney Head Coach Lee Crawford highlights a few keys for his team tonight. “We need to get ahead in counts and make them hit our pitch while up in the count like 0-1 and 0-2. We need to execute defensively and make all of the routine plays. Lastly, we need to go out and have fun. We are at our best when we are having fun and getting after it.”

Two wins separate the Savages from a state bid and they can get one step closer starting at 7 p.m. tonight in New London.
