The Sigourney Savage baseball team saw the class 1A District nine title slip through their fingers Saturday at No. 7 New London when the Tigers rallied in their last at bat to end the Savages season in a 4-3 contest. Sigourney led throughout the contest, the only lead New London had all night occurred with their walk off in the seventh. Sigourney scored twice in the second to go up 2-0, with New London answering with a single tally in the bottom half to get within 2-1. Sigourney scored an insurance run in the fifth to push the lead to 3-1 and that’s where things stood going to the seventh. In the final frame, New London scratched out three runs to avoid the upset, save their season and claim the district title. Each team had five hits, the Sigourney offense also drew four walks and struck out just five times in the game while the Savage staff posted nine strikeouts. Cade Molyneux led Sigourney with the Savages lone RBI. Josh Mohr, Levi Crawford, Cade Streigle, and Reid Molyneux all had one hit each. Crawford scored twice, Mohr had the other run. Sigourney completes their season at 19-6 and will say goodbye to lone senior Josh Mohr. New London will meet Mount Ayr, who was an 8-2 winner over Martinsdale-St. Mary’s in the class 1A substate five final at Oskaloosa Tuesday for the right to advance to the 1A state tournament in Carroll. The Tigers are now 25-1, the Raiders are 21-4.
