An Ottumwa man was sentenced to 15 years in prison for his role in the death of a Fairfield man Monday.

Jefferson County Attorney Chauncey Moulding states that 59-year-old William Brown provided methamphetamine mixed with Alka-seltzer and liquid in the form of a syringe to Dustin Canaday on July 31, 2020. After consuming the meth solution Canaday became violently ill and collapsed on the floor. Emergency responders were contacted but not in time to save Canaday’s life. Brown was charged with manslaughter and delivery of a controlled substance. He posted bond but was targeted in a law enforcement operation in December 2020 and caught on camera delivering methamphetamine to another individual where he would be charged again with delivery of a controlled substance. Video evidence of the death of Canaday was later played in the District Court of Jefferson County where Brown was sentenced to a 10 year prison term for both cases of delivery of controlled substance to run consecutive to additional five years for manslaughter for a total of 15 years in prison.
