Significant changes are coming to a few varsity sports in the coming years with the committees of the Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union approving the new measures on Tuesday.

Starting in the 2022-23 season high school basketball in Iowa will have a shot clock of 35 seconds. All participating schools will be required to implement this at the varsity level and all sub-varsity competition will have the option of a shot clock. No team will be allowed to enforce a shot clock for the 2021-22 season. Another change that was made has the boys and girls track and field season starting earlier. For the spring of 2022 the first practice is now set for Monday, February 21st instead of the previous date of Monday, February 28th. The first competition date is still Monday, March 7th. Lastly, starting in the 2021-22 bowling season the state meet and state qualifying meets will now have both team and individual tournaments. Team events will feature baker games, then a bracketed format while individual tournaments will be three games including a bracket for the top eight individuals at state.
