Our top 10 countdown of the best sports stories in Southeast Iowa from the 2020-21 academic year continues today with number seven on our list. This countdown includes area schools of Columbus, Highland, Lone Tree, Winfield-Mt. Union, WACO, Keota, and Sigourney. The seventh best story takes us to Winfield when one softball player capped off a career that won’t soon be forgotten.

The Winfield-Mt. Union softball program has recorded 62 wins in the last five years and Madie Anderson has been in the circle for every single one. The senior already had a monstrous career coming into her final season and this past summer was the cherry on top. She pitched every inning for the Wolves and finished the campaign with a 0.58 earned run average in 157 innings of work that ranked third in class 1A. Anderson struck out 305 batters, only administered 22 walks, had a 17-6 record, and a .114 opponent batting average. The five year starter tossed her first career perfect game on July 1st against Lone Tree in just 84 pitches and mowed down 20 of 21 batters via strikeout. Postseason awards piled in for the pitcher including being named first team all state by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association.

Anderson will continue her softball career next year at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa. Check back in tomorrow for number six on our countdown when we breakdown state wrestling qualifiers.
