The seventh biggest sports story of the year at Mid-Prairie High School takes us to the soccer pitch. After a forced year off due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys soccer team returned to the pitch with a strong season. The Hawks went 11-5 overall, including a 7-0 start to the year that saw them climb as high as fifth in the class 2A poll from the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association. That stretch included wins over ranked Monticello, Cascade and Columbus teams by a combined 12-2 score. The latter half of the year proved tough for the Golden Hawks as they dropped four of six entering the playoffs.
Once in the postseason, the Golden Hawks again found their form, topping perennial power Pella Christian in the opener 3-0. They followed that up with a road trip to No. 8 Albia where they beat the Blue Demons on their home field by a 1-0 score in penalty kicks. The match was scoreless through both regulation halfs and a pair of overtime periods. In penalty kicks Mid-Prairie claimed the victory 3-2 with goals from Jarret Hoffman, Tucker Miller and Owen Trimpe while goal keeper Justice Jones stopped a pair of penalty shots and the Blue Demons missed one off frame. Mid-Prairie’s season came to an end in the substate final at No. 4 West Liberty by a 3-0 score, one step shy of the state tournament in Des Moines.
