Our top 10 countdown of the best sports stories in Southeast Iowa from the 2020-21 academic year continues today with number six on our list. This countdown includes area schools of Columbus, Highland, Lone Tree, Winfield-Mt. Union, WACO, Keota, and Sigourney. The sixth best story takes us to the wrestling mat with a few area athletes finishing the season on the podium.

Among these schools, seven grapplers qualified for the 2021 Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines and three walked away with medals. The three-day tournament in February saw Lane Scorpil have the best area finish. The Columbus Community/Winfield-Mt. Union grappler placed third at 113 lbs in class 2A. The junior went 5-1 in the tournament with three pins, a 16-5 major, and 10-6 decision. Highland teammates Easton Schlabaugh and Bryce Thompson each found the podium in class 1A. Schlabaugh placed fifth at 106 lbs by going 4-2 and Thompson had the same result at 113 lbs. Other area athletes that competed at state included Sigourney’s Cade Molyneux and Cade Streigle, WACO’s Landan Provino, and Columbus Community/WMU’s Chance Malone.

Check back in Monday for number five on our countdown when we look at state track qualifiers.
