The sixth biggest sports story at Mid-Prairie over the last school year takes us to the baseball diamond. The Golden Hawks were coming off of their first conference title since 2000 and first state tournament appearance since 2007 from the 2020 season and followed that up with another strong year.
The Golden Hawks finished the year with a 19-8 overall record. They were 14-4 champions of the River Valley Conference South Division for the second straight year. In the playoffs they brought home their second district title in a row. After knocking out Iowa City Regina 10-0 in the opening round, the Hawks walked off rival Williamsburg 5-4 for the district 11 championship, the first time the program had advanced that far in the playoffs in back-to-back seasons since 2006-7. Mid-Prairie saw their season come to an end in the substate round of the postseason at the hands of Davis County 7-4.
The Golden Hawks spent all year in the class 2A top 10 poll released by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association. They started the year at No. 4 in the preseason poll, rose as high as No. 3 and dropped as low as No. 9. Golden Hawk senior Aidan Rath capped off a prolific career with a tremendous senior season. The Golden Hawk pitcher and outfielder hit 12 home runs this year, to lead class 2A. He finished with 23 career homers, a new Mid-Prairie record. For the 2021 season, first year Mid-Prairie head coach Kyle Mullet was recognized by the River Valley Conference as South Division Coach of the Year.
