A mobile museum bus is making a pit stop in Kalona Monday.
The Traces Bus Museum or “Bus-eum” brings history to many people throughout the midwest. Beginning on July 1st, the tour started in Des Moines and has made its way to Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Nebraska, Illinois and North Dakota. Kalona Public Library Director of Youth Services Olivia Kahler describes how this museum ties in with Iowa history, “So there’s a pretty big span of history but it’s all things that happened kind of right at our back door. Midwest is a general term but a lot of these things took place or were similar to things that took place in Iowa during those time periods. Especially dealing with the flu pandemic which was nation wide as well as the farmer rebellion, that’s what the cow war is, things like that are very relatable to our community here.”
The exhibit titled “Reactionary Movements in America’s Heartland” covers events from the anti-German hysteria of WWI, through the 1918 flu pandemic, Ku Klux Klan, Prohibition, farmer rebellions to the Great Depression. The museum will be parked outside of the Kalona Library starting at 4 p.m. and a free will donation will be accepted. This program is made possible by the Kalona Public Library Foundation.
