A Kalona man was recently given a deferred judgment on a burglary charge in Washington County.
Court documents show that through a plea agreement a charge of third-degree burglary, a class D felony, was deferred for 19-year-old Austin Dean Vandenburg, and a charge of fourth-degree theft, a serious misdemeanor was dismissed. Vandenburg is placed on five years probation to Washington County Outreach, and must pay a statutory civil penalty of $1,025 and $500 in pecuniary damages. The charges stemmed from a December 23, 2020 incident in which Vandenburg admitted to entering a resident’s apartment without permission and taking items from the property in Kalona.
