The fourth biggest sports story for Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk athletics from the recently competed school year takes us back to the golf course and highlights senior Dominic McCain. McCain finished his sophomore season in 2019 with a 9-hole average score of 49 and shot 93 at the River Valley Conference Tournament at Blue Top Ridge in Riverside, leaving him on the outside of all-RVC honors looking in, for a Golden Hawk team that finished as River Valley runners-up. All of that fed McCain’s desire to comeback with a big junior season with an eye an all-conference awards and possibly a state tournament bid. When COVID-19 canceled the 2020 season, it left McCain with just one shot to check those boxes, and he took full advantage.
He led Mid-Prairie with a 39.7 average per nine holes, top 15 in the state in class 3A. He was meet medalist four times during the year, finishing fourth at the River Valley Conference Championship meet at Blue Top Ridge in Riverside, earning elite all-conference recognition. In the postseason, he advanced through the 3A sectional tournament at Pine Knolls in Knoxville with a round of 79, placing sixth. At districts, McCain had a huge day, going low with a round of 76 that included a one-over-par front nine, a personal best, and finished as runner-up to advance to state in Marshalltown. At the 3A state tournament, McCain finished 11th overall, shooting an 81 on day one and coming back with an 80 on day two. With that performance he was named to the class 3A all-state tournament golf team.
McCain wrapped up his career placing top 10 along with Madelyn Bender in the class 1A state co-ed meet. The duo was 10th of 41 teams competing.
