The top 10 countdown of the best sports stories from the 2020-21 school year for Washington takes us to the hardwood for number four on our list. The fourth best story looks at a strong winter for the Demon boys’ basketball team.
Fresh off their first Southeast Conference title since 2007 the year prior, Washington went from the role of playing the hunter to being the hunted. The target on their back for the 2020-21 winter was something the orange and black embraced and they found themselves on top of the SEC once again. They tied Burlington for the league crown with a 7-3 conference slate and 15-7 overall mark. A 57-43 victory over Keokuk on February 12th sealed their fate within the conference for the second straight season. The Demons had the ability to score in bunches averaging 60 points a game that ranked first in the conference. Other league best categories included 32.5 rebounds a game, 3.2 blocks a night, 48% field goal efficiency, and shooting 68% from the line. The squad had five players named all conference led by first team selection Ethan Patterson. The sophomore was fourth in the SEC in scoring with 15.7 points a contest, shot at a 40.4% clip from the field, and made 89.7% of his free throws. Kasen Bailey and Trashaun Willis also averaged double figures with 13.9 and 10.4 points per game, respectively. Washington beat Oskaloosa 49-37 in a first round class 3A playoff before falling to Grinnell 49-48 in the second round.
Check back in tomorrow for number three on our countdown when we breakdown a historic cross country season for one individual.
