Washington County is now considered a “Second Amendment Sanctuary County,” following action by the Board of Supervisors Tuesday.

Following discussion last week, the board voted on a vote of 4-1 with Bob Yoder opposing to pass a resolution declaring that legislation made by the United States Congress or state legislature or any state or federal executive order that infringes upon the right of residents to keep and bear arms shall not be enforced by any individual employed by the county or the sheriff’s office. Supervisors Jack Seward, Jr. and Richard Young proposed they pass this resolution after seeing similar resolutions passed in Jasper and Hardin counties this summer. Madison and Cedar counties have also passed these resolutions. This comes as permitless carry of handguns was legalized this year in Iowa, and Iowa voters will decide whether a pro-gun constitutional amendment should be made in 2022. Yoder commented that in talking with the Kalona and Riverside city councils about the proposal Monday night, it seemed that Kalona was against the passage and Riverside was on both sides of the issue. You can find the resolution in the PDF below.
