The names of those involved in a single-vehicle wreck Thursday in Henry County that left three dead and two injured have been released.
The Iowa State Patrol states at about 6:21 a.m. 55-year-old Chester Lee Simmons of Minneapolis, Minnesota was driving a Kia Soul southbound on Highway 218 near mile marker 43 when the vehicle left the roadway, entered the median and went airborne. The vehicle struck a bridge pillar and came to rest on its top on railroad tracks. Chester and passengers 44-year-old Robert Earl Frost and 62-year-old Johnatta Vernessa Cook also from Minneapolis died as a result of their injuries. Forty-nine year-old Yolanda Crystal Smith of Brooklynn Center, Minnesota and a three-year-old passenger from Minneapolis were transported by MedForce and Henry County Ambulance Service to the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics. Smith and Frost were not wearing seatbelts during the time of the crash. The incident remains under investigation. Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Mount Pleasant Fire and Rescue, Iowa Department of Transportation, and BNSF Railway also assisted at the scene.
