The top 10 countdown of the best sports stories for Washington from the 2020-21 school year continues today with number two on our list. The second best story takes us to the spring in a season with many highlights for the Demon boys’ track team.

Unable to hit the track in 2020, Washington had a lot of success to make up for and that’s exactly what they did in 2021. Peaking in May is the goal for any track squad and that showed on May 6th when the orange and black claimed a Southeast Conference title in Keokuk with 162 points to blow out second place by 32 points. Seven events took home gold including three time champ Lance Sobaski in the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m. Fast forward a few weeks and the culmination of the season was on the Blue Oval in Des Moines. Elijah Morris ran at Drake Stadium a month prior in the Drake Relays, but couldn’t finish his 400m race due to injury. The sophomore was determined to not let history repeat itself and he left his mark at state by having a strong kick in the class 3A finals to win the 400m dash in 49.53 seconds. That was .14 seconds faster than the next runner and he was the program’s first state champion since 2008. Morris headlined a Washington team that finished 12th in the team standings with 10 events competing. Also receiving medals included Ethan Patterson third in the high jump, the sprint medley relay of Patterson, Wyatt Stout, Jacob Miller, and Morris in fourth, and Sobaski seventh in the 800m.

Check back in tomorrow for number one on our countdown when we look at the dynasty that is Washington girls golf.
