We have reached the pinnacle of our top 10 countdown of the best sports stories from the 2020-21 academic year for Washington with number one on our list. The top Demon story is the continued dominance that is the Washington girls golf dynasty.
The orange and black placed sixth at the state tournament in 2019 and was a favorite to take home gold in 2020. While the pandemic put a wrench in those plans, it wasn’t going to stop the 2021 squad in their quest for a program’s sixth state title. Being pushed by their competition was a rarity for Washington this spring, as they won every meet or tournament throughout the year except one. They placed second at a Waukee Invitational on May 10th only behind eventual class 4A champion West Des Moines Valley. The Demons won the Southeast Conference tournament by an eye-popping 89 strokes and it all culminated in a class 3A state title on June 2nd. They shot a two-day score of 675 in Adel to blow away second place Gilbert by 28 strokes. Senior Kiki Bruner was the headliner finishing runner-up with a 77 first round paired with 74 second to make 151 total. Anna Nacos cracked the top five in fifth, Makenna Conrad was 12th and Josie Tanner closed out her career in 22nd. This was the sixth state championship in school history including fourth in the last seven years.
Bruner told KCII Sports how the team handled being the frontrunners all year long. “We would only focus on the next meet. At the beginning of the season we never thought about state and only thought about the next competition. I think that kept us grounded and prepared. Coach (Len) Kull did a great job of keeping us close and a tight knit group. He reminded us what is important and that is just enjoying the game of golf.”
Bruner, Nacos, and Tanner all graduate and they will continue their golf career next season in college. If you missed any story from our top 10 countdown find it online at kciiradio.com.
