Kalona saw the largest increase in population in Washington County for the 2020 U.S. Census.

From 2010-2020, Washington County saw its overall population rise from 21,704 to 22,565, a 4% increase. While most cities in Iowa saw a population decrease in the last decade, the cities of Washington, Kalona, Riverside, Wellman and Crawfordsville all saw population increases with Kalona seeing an increase of over 10% from 2,363 to 2,630. West Chester, Ainsworth and Brighton all saw slight decreases in population with Ainsworth experiencing the biggest drop of 56 residents. Another notable decrease was right outside of Washington County in the city of Keota, which dropped more than 10% from 1,009 to 897. The state legislature will use the 2020 Census data in the redistricting process as well as county redistricting commissions.
