Just two days until the Winfield-Mt. Union football team will kickoff a much anticipated 2021 campaign when they welcome Moravia for week one action.
The Wolves are coming off of a 4-4 year, more wins than the previous four seasons combined. With a lot of familiar faces back, expectations are high and they will be led by all stater Cam Buffington. The sophomore and future University of Iowa linebacker ran for 956 yards in his debut season while reaching pay dirt 17 times as a runningback. He will take over full time quarterback duties this year and last fall he completed four passes for 104 yards and two scores. He’ll be joined by fellow sophomore Abram Edwards and his 404 yards of total offense in 2020.
The Wolves faced off with Central City last week in a scrimmage and while it didn’t go as smooth as planned, head coach Scott McCarty tells KCII Sports his team knows what they need to improve on. “I had expectations coming into it, but we didn’t quite meet those and the kids thought the same thing. Before I gave my input, they mentioned everything that we need to improve on and they were absolutely right. The players are aware of everything we need to work on and are ready to get after it.”
The Mohawks were 1-7 last year, but bring back their quarterback, leading receiver, and leading tackler. Gage Hanes looks to build off of 438 passing yards with seven touchdowns and Riley Hawkins had 14 receptions for 265 yards. Shane Helmick will anchor a defense that gave up 45 points a night last year.
The season starts up at 7 p.m. Friday in Winfield.
