A senior night football celebration to open the season in Riverside Friday was cut short as visiting East Buchanan crashed the Huskies’ party with a 24-12 win. After a scoreless first quarter, the Buccaneers took command with a 16 point second quarter to take a 16-0 lead into the half. Out of the break, Highland got on the board with a touchdown to pull within 16-6. Each team would find the end zone in the final frame but East Buchanan did enough down the stretch to keep the Huskies at arms length.

EB outgained Highland 374 to 268 including 351-185 on the ground. Adam Hacket led the Buccaneers with 16 carries for 154 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Connor Williams added 14 carries for 72 yards and a pair of scores for the Bucs. They also took advantage of four Highland giveaways, two fumbles and two interceptions. In the loss, the Huskies were led by Connor Grinstead with 235 yards of total offense including 152 on the ground with a touchdown on 14 carries. Through the air he was two of 11 for 83 yards a touchdown and two interceptions. Logan Bonebrake pulled in both completions for Highland for 83 yards and a score. Grinstead also led the Huskies defense with 10 stops, six solo. Highland forced three turnovers with Luke Miller and Trevor McFarland recovering fumbles and Brenton Bonebrake snagging a pick. With the loss, Highland falls to 0-1 as they travel this week to 1-0 Columbus.
