The first home varsity football game of the season isn’t the only thing to cheer for at Case Field this Friday.
The Washington Marching Demons will perform their first halftime show of the year, which is their first with actual marching formations as the COVID-19 pandemic pared down their performances last year. This year’s show titled “Orpheus” was composed by Demon alum John Flannery, into which Junior Drum Major Bailey Rees gives KCII a sneak peek, “Our show is to the theme of the Greek myth story Orpheus and Eurydice which are two lovers, who, when Eurydice dies and Orpheus is sad, Orpheus is the son of a muse and a very talented musician. So he tries to go back and retrieve Eurydice from the underworld and in that there are some hardships but he uses his music to kind of go over those obstacles along the way.”
Rees adds that much of the story of “Orpheus” will be told through the color guard, and altogether the band has about 65 students this year. The band will perform at every home varsity football game beginning Friday, and at several competitions later this fall under the direction of Don Hughes with assistance from middle school band teacher Craig McClenahan.
