A special election is approaching for the Winfield-Mt. Union School District to issue general obligation bonds for proposed projects.
The district is asking whether to issue a $3.2 million dollar general obligation bond to construct a performing arts/athletic facility, a classroom addition to the industrial tech building and a weight room addition to the high school building. Superintendent Jeff Maeder says that the district came out ahead after completing installation of a HVAC system in 2020 with roughly $1 million. With these extra funds Maeder gives estimates of where the $3.2 million will come from, “It ends up being about $1.60 per $1,000 residential properties in taxable value. The amount, and this is really an estimate I can’t stress that enough, for farm land based on the average assessed value of farmland is about $1.49 per acre. Again, that’s an estimate of the average assessed values.”
Election day is September 14th with polls open from 7 a.m.-8 p.m., and mailed absentee ballots must be received by the county auditor by 8 p.m. Residents can vote via absentee at the Henry, and Louisa county auditor’s offices from 8-4:30 p.m. from now until September 13th.
