It was tough sledding in week three for the Washington Demon football team when they traveled north to Tiffin and the home Clippers of Clear Creek-Amana pulled away in the second half for a 48-14 victory.

As heard on KCII, the game could not have started more rocky for the Demons with CCA (2-1) recovering the opening kickoff that led to a field goal and then a quick Washington three-and-out turned into a one play 67-yard rushing score from Gage Freeman. Another field goal later in the half made it 13-0 before Washington could find their footing. The Demons put a nice drive together capped off by a 37-yard run from Ethan Patterson that found pay dirt and a few plays later got the ball back on a fumble by Clear Creek-Amana. Threatening to take the lead deep in enemy territory, the orange and black turned the ball over on downs and that set up a back breaking 84-yard scamper from Freeman on the final play of scrimmage to take a 20-8 halftime lead. The momentum never swung back the Demons way with four consecutive Clipper touchdowns in the second half headlined by a 42-yard bomb from Ben Swails to Andrew Schlemme and a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown by Reece Hoffman. The only Washington score came in the final minutes of the game with a six yard rush from Ethan Zieglowsky.

Demon Head Coach Nick Ehret tells KCII Sports a lot of self inflicted wounds hurt them in this one. “It was our mistakes. We didn’t cover the opening kickoff and then our defense did a good job of holding them to three, but our offense is struggling right now in the red zone. We are moving the ball well, but can’t convert it into points. We had a couple blown assignments late in the first half that led to big plays and the wheels fell off in the second half. It is one of those games that you have to learn a lot from and then move on to next week.”

The Demons drop to 1-2 and return home to close out the non-district slate on Friday against Fort Madison.
