A business trip to Donnellson was a successful one for the Winfield-Mt. Union boys’ cross country team on Tuesday when they came home champions.
The Wolves placed first out of four at Green Acres Golf Course with 45 points to beat out Louisa-Muscatine’s 62. Sophomore Gabe Hemsworth claimed his first meet title by dropping below 19:00 and clocking in at 18:58, 33 seconds faster than the second place finisher. Freshman Kohlby Newson was also top three in third with 20:10. All five scores cracked the top 15 with Jeff Maish 12th (21:16), Jacob Haines 14th (21:27), and Ty Scorpil 15th (21:28). The girls had a pair of runners with Olivia Martinez in 19th (31:43) and Maggie Hutton 21st (33:15).
The Wolves have a quick turnaround with a meet at Fort Madison this evening that also features area schools Washington and Columbus Community. The action begins at 5 p.m. at the middle school.
