The Winfield-Mt. Union football team had a huge bounce back win Friday in Victor, pounding HLV 54-21. The Wolves didn’t spend much time licking their wounds after week three’s loss to New London, their first of the year. They jumped on the Warriors from the opening kick, leading 16-7 after one quarter and 38-8 at half. WMU added a touchdown to their lead in the third quarter to put the game out of reach at 46-8 going to the fourth and scored once more in the final frame.
The Wolves posted 396 yards of total offense in the win, 239 of that coming through the air. Cam Buffington put on a show with 360 total yards, going 11 of 17 in the passing game for 239, three touchdowns and one pick. He connected with Abram Edwards three times for 131 yards including two touchdowns, one of them a strike of 65 yards. Caleb Giese had four catches for 81 yards and a 65 yard touchdown. Buffington led the way on the ground, averaging more than 10 yards a carry with 12 totes for 121 yards and four more touchdowns. Sullivan Scott led the WMU defense with 12 tackles, 10 solo and a fumble recovery. The Wolves had five sacks in the game. WMU is now 3-1 on the year and will be in Lone Tree next week to meet the Lions on their Homecoming.
