It’s a battle of KCII area schools tonight in Lone Tree when the Lions host Winfield-Mt. Union on Homecoming. Lone Tree comes into the game with an overall record of 3-1 posting victories over Midland, Central City and HLV with a loss to English Valleys 12-0 sandwiched in the first month. The Lions had a bye last week. Against the Warriors it was a 66-40 victory where Cade Shield had a hand in all eight Lion touchdowns, five passing and three rushing, and accounted for 441 all-purpose yards, every single one the Lions gained. He also recovered a fumble along with Mathew Hemstead and Cade Patterson intercepted a pass. For the year, the Lions are led by Shield through the air at 43 of 75 for 472 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions. On the ground he has 73 carries for 357 yards and seven touchdowns. Leading receiver is Cade Patterson with 26 catches for 300 yards and three touchdowns. Hemsted has 33 and a half tackles, including 21 solo. Patterson has intercepted three passes.

Winfield-Mt. Union is also 3-1 on the season. WMU has wins this year against Moravia, Iowa Valley and HLV with a loss to New London. Against the Warriors a week ago, the Wolves were 54-21 victors. Cam Buffington was 11 of 18 for 239 yards and three touchdowns in the passing game with two going to Abram Edwards and one going to Caleb Giese. Buffington added 118 yards on the ground on 14 carries with four more touchdowns. Edwards and Sullivan Scott both ended with nine tackles. Scott recovered a fumble. On the year, WMU is led by Buffington’s 867 yards, 13 touchdowns and two interceptions on 41 of 72 passing. Edwards is the leading receiver with 16 grabs for 391 yards and six touchdowns. On the ground, Buffington has 75 carries for 577 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also leads the Wolves defense with 30 and a half tackles. Lone Tree has won nine of the last 10 in the series including a 66-36 victory last year. WMU’s last win was by a 30-20 score in 2015. Action starts tonight at 6:30p.m. at Lone Tree High School.
