The Winfield-Mt. Union volleyball team traveled to Louisa-Muscatine Thursday for the opening pool play round of the Southeast Iowa Superconference tournament. The Wolves, seeded seventh, went 2-1 on the night, advancing on to Saturday’s championship rounds. WMU opened the night with a sweep of Van Buren, the Wolves beat the 10 seed 21-14 and 21-3. It was also a sweep in the second round for Winfield-Mt. Union taking out 15th seed L-M 21-9 and 21-14. In the nightcap against the second seed West Burlington Falcons, the Wolves were beaten in straight sets 21-10 and 21-18. On the night Melina Oepping led the Wolves attack with 17 kills, Bradie Buffington added 14. Keely Malone finished with 38 assists, Keetyn Townsley had 34 digs and Carlee Sloan was a perfect 25 of 25 from the service line with four aces. After the tournament Thursday, WMU head coach Dave Pieart talked about his standouts. “We have some young kids that are playing in their first conference tournament and I thought they did well. I thought our experienced players got better and better as the night wore on. I  like my libero Keetyn Townsley against almost anybody and I thought Keely Malone and Bradie Buffington had a very good night on offense. They are the core of our offense and they did exactly what we asked them to do.”

The Wolves are now 14-7 on the year and will play in the tournament finals Saturday at Southeastern Community College in Burlington.
