Masks will once again be required for the Fairfield Community School District.
Beginning today all students and staff will be required to wear face masks in school buildings. During their meeting September 20th, the school board voted 4-3 in favor of following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations of face masks being worn inside public buildings. According to the Iowa coronavirus dashboard, Jefferson County recorded 76 new cases last week with a 14-day average positive test rate of 12%, higher than the state’s rate of 9.4%, as of September 24th. As of last week the Washington, Mid-Prairie and Highland school districts and Hillcrest Academy do not have a mask mandate and encourage students and staff to wear them as they see fit. Governor Kim Reynolds signed a law passed last spring that banned schools and local governments from having mask mandates, which a federal judge filed a temporary restraining order on September 13th allowing schools to enact mask requirements.
