In a battle of KCII area football teams Friday night it was the vistors who went home happy on Homecoming in Lone Tree as Winfield Mt. Union held off Lone Tree in a 32-22 victory. The Wolves owned the first half, leading 14-0 after one quarter and 26-0 at the half. WMU would grow the lead to a commanding 32-0 after three frames before the Lions began a furious fourth quarter comeback that saw them post 22 points but ultimately fall short. The Wolves rolled up 413 total yards of offense to 270 for the Lions including holding a 318-129 advantage on the ground. Cam Buffington led the way for the victors, going four of eight through the air for 73 yards and a pair of scores, connecting three times with Abram Edwards for 73 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, Buffington put up 200 yards and two more scores on 15 carries. Sullivan Scott added a rushing touchdown for the Wolves. WMU also forced a pair of turnovers with Noah Sparrow and Cole Milks each picking off a pass. Buffington led the Wolves defense with five and a half tackles.
The Lion attack was led by Cade Shield and his 11 of 18 night through the air for 141 yards and a touchdown. He connected four times each with Cade Patterson and Mathew Hemsted for a combined 137 yards and a score. Shield led the ground game with 19 carries for 116 yards and two touchdowns. Hemsted led the Lion defense with nine and a half tackles. WMU is now 4-1 on the year and has a bye before hosting their arch rival WACO on October 8th, Lone Tree is 3-2 and visits the WACO Warriors this week.
