Just hours after the cross country teams wreaked havoc at home, the volleyball team made it an all around big night for Washington athletics on Tuesday with a five set slugfest victory over Fairfield for their first Southeast Conference triumph.
The energy from the players and crowd was apparent right from the get-go and that helped the Demons snatch the first two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-22. The Trojans (7-13) made sure a long night of volleyball would follow by taking the next two by 25-17 and 25-23 tallies. The fifth and decisive set was tied at eight when an Ella Greiner and Remy Messinger kill gave the orange and black the lead they wouldn’t relinquish en route to a 15-11 win. Kills came from all over for the Demons with Kenializ Espinosa leading the way with 13, Alex Murphy had 11, and Greiner tallied nine. Senior libero Ava Turner was everywhere defensively with 30 digs while Messinger and Haley Mitchell teamed up for 27 assists.
Head Coach Aaron Six could not have been more pleased with his team. “I thought our girls played exceptional tonight. We passed extremely well and hit our spots in serving that kept them on their heels. Our effort showed that we wanted this one. Ava was outstanding and Kenializ and Alex were hitting the ball extremely well. I am just so happy for everyone.”
The Demons improve to 1-4 in the league, 2-16 overall, and they get back at it tomorrow at Clear Creek-Amana (14-7).
