An attempt to win their second straight game fell short on Friday for the Columbus Community football team when they had a long road trip to New Sharon and were edged by North Mahaska 12-10.
Both defenses controlled this one from the start with the score in favor of the Warhawks 6-3 at halftime after Yahir Ayala connected on a 29-yard field goal in the second quarter. The only Wildcat touchdown of the night came in the third on a 10-yard rush from Triston Miller. The Warhawks (1-5) cashed in with a touchdown as well after Sam Terpstra’s second passing score of the game to hold on for the two point victory. Columbus outgained North Mahaska 255-191 on the strength of 248 rushing yards. Kaden Amigon carried the rock 21 times for 144 yards and Miller finished with 44 yards on 11 carries and the one score. The Wildcats were minus one in the turnover department with Logan Bright managing an interception defensively. The senior led that unit with 5.5 tackles.
Columbus now sits at 2-4 and they return home for the final time on Friday hosting North Cedar (1-5).
