The Sigourney-Keota Cobra and WACO Warrior football teams continue to represent southeast Iowa at the state level in the Associated Press top 10 high school football polls.
In class 1A, SK is ranked No. 4 this week, following a 37-9 win at Central Decatur Friday. They are receiving one first place vote to be the No. 1 team in the state. It was a big performance by the Sigourney-Keota offense against the Cardinals, with 483 total yards on the board, 282 on the ground and 201 through the air. Colten Clarahan was eight of 11 passing with a pair of touchdowns. Cade Molyneux recorded 148 rushing yards and three touchdowns. On the year, the Snakes are scoring 37 points per game while giving up just 15. They are eighth in 1A with 35 total touchdowns. Their 2,713 yard total is seventh most. On the ground, the Cobras are second in 1A with 2,288 yards, eighth with 6.8 yards per carry and fifth with 27 rushing touchdowns. The SK defense has 13 sacks on the year, ninth most in 1A. Individually, Molyneux is sixth in 1A with 21 total touchdowns and seventh with 1,574 yards. His 202 carries are most in 1A, as are his 1,481 yards on the ground and his 19 rushing scores are third most. Evan Vittetoe is sixth in Iowa with four and a half sacks to lead the Cobra defense. Cole Clarahan is third in 1A with three interceptions.
The WACO Warriors climbed two more spots this week from No. 7 to No. 5. Two weeks ago they were ranked No. 9 in 8-man. Last time on the field the Warriors handled rival Winfield-Mt. Union 47-20 on the Wolves Senior Night. WACO put up 377 total yards in the game with Isaac Oswald nine of 13 through the air for 149 yards and three touchdowns, connecting with Drew Diers, Simeon Reichenbach and Jon Rice on scoring throws. On the ground, Reichenbach had 15 carries for 113 yards and four touchdowns. WACO is scoring 42 points per game while giving up just 12. The WACO run game is fifth in 8-man football with 2,005 yards. Their 37 rushing touchdowns are seventh most. Defensively, the Warriors are eighth in 8-man with 16 sacks. Their 57.5 total tackles for loss are also seventh most. They are turning opponents over at an incredible rate, leading the state with 16 interceptions, two of which have been returned for touchdowns and recording 11 fumble recoveries, fourth most in 8-man. Individually, Reichenbach is eighth in the state with 1,035 yards on the ground, his 18 touchdowns are seventh most. Defensively, Mason Miller is second with seven interceptions and Colten Leichty is third in 8-man football with four fumble recoveries on the season.
Both teams have clinched district championships this season. WACO is off until the playoffs with a bye this Friday. The Cobras host Van Buren this week for Senior Night in Sigourney.
