If revenge is really sweet then it doesn’t get any sweeter than last night in Winfield. The Wolves’ volleyball program dropped a pair of matches to Wapello in the regular season and the Arrows were the only reason WMU didn’t capture a repeat crown in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division. History did not repeat itself last night, as the Wolves made it third time’s a charm by invading Wapello in a class 1A region 7 quarterfinal and coming away with an exciting five set victory.
Every set was tooth and nail decided by five points or less and the Wolves jumped out early with a 25-22 triumph in the first. The Arrows (26-11) answered right back by taking the next two 25-21 and 26-24. The Wolves refused to hang it up and rattled off two straight by 25-22 and 15-10 scores to pull off the playoff win. Melina Oepping and Bradie Buffington were money offensively with 15 and 10 kills, respectively. Keely Malone had a monstrous 40 assists, Keetyn Townsley was everywhere with 59 digs, and Lily Freeman managed five blocks. Townsley was successful on 19 of 21 serves with one ace and Malone had six aces.
WMU improves to 22-10 and advances to Monday’s regional semifinal round at #1 Burlington Notre Dame (33-8).
