The second proposed redistricting maps for Iowa’s congressional and state legislative districts were released by the nonpartisan Legislative Services Agency Thursday, following the first plan’s rejection by the state senate earlier this month.

The new congressional map now puts Washington County in the first district, which now goes as far west as Warren County. For the state senate all of Washington County would be in the 46th district which includes all of Iowa and the more rural parts of Johnson. All of Washington County would also be in House District 92 in the new map, which includes a southeast portion of Johnson. The first maps had Washington generally split north and south into different house and senate districts. If approved by the legislature, these new maps would affect many incumbent election races in 2022, most notably congressional as what’s drawn would have 3rd District Representative Cindy Axne (D) and 2nd District Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R) living in the same district. Lawmakers have less than a week now to consider these maps, as Governor Kim Reynolds has called for a special session October 28th.
